Community Development

photo : communityThe major work of our Community Develop- ment Team (John Shannon and Sarah Paine) remains to :

  • Give voice to the many disadvantaged communities that live in Hillfields
  • Develop the skills of local voluntary/ community organisations, so that they can realise their full potential
  • Helping to develop community-led res- ponses to pressing socio-economic con- ditions
  • Using a quarterly newspaper (The Hillfields News and Views) to disseminate information throughout the community

WATCH stimulates community activity in the area by operating a system of grants towards local projects (22 grants in the past year, to a total of £10 000).

WATCH's Community Development Team acts as an interface between the statutory sector and the local community (the Police Liaison Group; the Environmental Action Group; the Health Action Group; the Community Safety Group; the Hillfields Partnership Board)

Our team also assists in a number of initiatives to promote Hillfields (helping to organise the Gala Week, Bonfire Night), as well as religious ceremonies (Eid, Diwali), Women's Week, Refugee Week and Peace Month.

The Community Development project is funded by ERDF, via the Hillfields Partnership Board.
